Community

Community Wellbeing is defined as  the opportunity to contribute and connect individual passions and strengths that foster a safe and supportive environment.

Social and community well being is about having positive interactions with and enjoying being with others. A strong social network and a sense of community can create a good mood and enhance self-esteem.

Community Service Leave (CSL)

CSL provides leave-eligible SHRA & EHRA employees paid time off to volunteer in NC schools, communities, institutions of higher education, NC State agencies, and not-for-profit organizations; as long as the employee is not receiving pay for the service. All CSL must be preapproved by supervisor prior to volunteer event.

Literacy CSL

Literacy CSL is a special provision available in lieu of regular Community Service Leave to support a literacy program in a NC public school. Leave under this option shall be used exclusively for assisting students in reading and/or writing skills in accordance with established rules and guidelines for such arrangements as determined and documented by joint agreement with NCSU and the public school.  Advisory Note: For employees who live in a state adjacent to North Carolina, the agency may grant community service leave to parents for involvement in the child’s school

Tutoring/Mentoring CSL

Tutoring/Mentoring CSL is a special provision available in lieu of regular Community Service Leave and Literacy CSL to provide tutoring and mentoring for a student in a formal standardized approved tutoring/mentoring program in a public or a non-public school. Leave under this option is to be used exclusively for tutoring and/or mentoring an “at-risk” student in accordance with established rules and guidelines for such arrangements as determined and documented by joint agreement with NCSU and the public/non-public school.

Campus Volunteer Opportunities

Habitat for Humanity at NC State

Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that aims to end poverty housing world wide by gathering volunteers to build affordable homes for deserving families. Habitat homeowners do not get their homes for free. They put at least 250 hours of work into building their home, and they pay a low interest mortgage to Habitat. Habitat uses that money to build more homes. Habitat for Humanity at NC State is a very active club. We fund raise, advocate, and volunteer for Habitat. We have a lot of opportunities for students to get involved and volunteer with many different things. There are no membership dues or attendance requirements. We also host annual Fall and Spring break trips!! Find out more at and sign-up for our email listserv by sending us a message at habitatforhumanity@ncsu.edu

Feed the Pack Food Pantry

Feed the Pack Food pantry is a community-based initiative sustained by the greater NC State community to combat the food insecurity experienced by members of the Wolfpack family. Volunteers are always needed: https://feedthepack.dasa.ncsu.edu/

Interested in volunteering?

Feed the Pack is looking for dedicated volunteers to support the pantry during our open hours. Volunteers are responsible for opening/closing the pantry, helping patrons, organizing/shelving donations, and maintaining the pantry space.

JC Raulston Arboretum

The volunteer spirit lies at the core of the JC Raulston Arboretum. Volunteers have been building, maintaining, and reaching out to the public since 1976. They assist the staff by contributing thousands of hours every year. We invite you to join in an abundance of wealth and knowledge within a vibrant community that has a passion for plants, gardens, and people.
