Postdoc Health Insurance and Vision Plans

Eligibility and Effective Dates

Health insurance is offered to postdoctoral scholars/house officers, who are paid through the University payroll system.  To be covered under this benefit plan, postdocs/house officers must be on an active, paid assignment of at least .75 FTE (30 hrs/week).

Health insurance coverage begins on the first of the month following the hire/contract date. (Ex. hired 5/1, coverage begins 6/1; hired 5/31 coverage begins 6/1)

Coverage will end the last day of the month in which the postdoc/house officer terminates.  (Ex. job ends 5/2, coverage ends 5/31; job ends 5/31, coverage ends 5/31)

*The University pays the premium for BCBSNC and the fee for NC State Student Health Center.
**Postdoc/House Officers pay by bank draft through BCBSNC for dependent coverage.

Vision Plan

The vision plan’s benefits are as follows:

  • $10 Yearly Eye Exam Copay
  • $10 Standard Plastic Lens Copay
  • $150 Lenses/Contact Lens Allowance available every 12 months
  • $150 Frame Allowance available every 24 months (frame allowance & lenses allowance cannot be combined in a single plan year)

Plan Administration

The Postdoc/House Officers Medical Plan is underwritten by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of North Carolina and administered by BCBSNC, phone: 800-762-8505.

Enrollment Process

Complete the Postdoc/House Officers Medical Coverage Enrollment form and return it to the HR Benefits Office either by fax at 919/513-2528, campus mail at Campus Box 7215 or by regular mail at HR Benefits Campus Box 7215, Raleigh, NC 27695-7215 within 30 days of employment date.

Retirement Plans

Postdocs may participate in voluntary retirement programs through the UNC System Voluntary 403(b) Plan, UNC System Voluntary 403(b) Plan Program and the North Carolina Public Employee Deferred Compensation 457 Plan.

Leave

Full-time (1.0 FTE) postdocs/house officers earn one day of paid time off for annual leave and one day of sick leave on a monthly basis for a total of 12 days each (i.e., 12 annual leave days and 12 sick leave days) per year.  Leave is prorated for part-time postdocs who work half-time or more (.05-.99 FTE).  Leave accrual and use must be tracked in the HR Web Leave system.  Review Section 9 at Policy, Regulations & Rules for Postdoctoral Scholars for more details on leave.
